Privacy policy
The Oaxacan Coast
Effective date: June 24, 2026
This Privacy Policy explains how The Oaxacan Coast ("we," "us," or "our") handles information in connection with the The Oaxacan Coast mobile application (the "App"). It is provided by The Oaxacan Coast, based in Oaxaca, Mexico, in our capacity as the party responsible for the processing of personal data under Mexico's Federal Law on the Protection of Personal Data Held by Private Parties (Ley Federal de Protección de Datos Personales en Posesión de los Particulares, the "LFPDPPP"), and consistent with other data-protection laws that may apply to you depending on where you live.
We built the App to collect as little personal data as possible. Please read this policy together with our Terms of Service.
1. The short version
- The App does not require you to create an account or log in.
- Your saved listings ("Favs") and preferences are stored only on your device, not on our servers.
- We do not operate our own analytics or tracking, and we do not sell your personal data.
- The App shows ads through Google AdMob, which collects certain device and usage data to serve and measure ads. This is the main way data leaves your device.
- Location, when you allow it, is used on your device to show your position on the map and sort listings by distance. We do not receive or store your location.
The sections below give the detail.
2. Information we handle
2.1 Information stored only on your device
The following are stored locally on your device (using Android DataStore and local caches) and are not transmitted to us:
- Favs — listings you save.
- Preferences — such as your "Open to…" launch choice and last-visited town.
- Downloaded offline content — the coast basemap and any town data bundles you choose to download, plus cached listing and content data.
You can clear this information at any time by deleting downloaded content within the App or by clearing the App's data / uninstalling it.
2.2 Information you choose to give us
If you contact us — for example, using the feedback option, which opens your own email app to write to us — we receive whatever you choose to include, such as your email address and the content of your message. We use it only to read and respond to you.
2.3 Content we serve to you
To show you listings, maps, transport information, tide times, and similar content, the App connects to our hosting provider (Supabase) and content delivery services. As with any internet service, our hosting and infrastructure providers may automatically process technical connection data (such as IP address and request information) to deliver content and maintain security. We do not use this to identify you or build a profile of you.
2.4 Location information
If you grant location permission, the App uses your device location to:
- show your current position on the map, and
- sort listings by distance from where you are.
This happens on your device. We do not collect, receive, transmit, or store your location. If you deny location permission, the App still works — it falls back to town-center distances and simply does not show your position dot. You can change location permission at any time in your device settings.
2.5 Advertising data (Google AdMob)
The App displays ads served by Google AdMob. To serve and measure ads, Google and its partners may collect and process certain information from your device, which can include device identifiers (such as an advertising ID), IP address, general location inferred from your IP, and information about your interaction with ads.
We do not control how Google collects or uses this data. Google's handling of it is governed by Google's own privacy policy, available at https://policies.google.com/privacy, and you can learn about Google's advertising practices at https://policies.google.com/technologies/ads.
Depending on your device and region, you can limit ad personalization through your device settings (for example, by resetting or limiting your advertising ID).
3. How we use information
We use the limited information described above to:
- provide the App and its content to you;
- respond to you when you contact us;
- display advertising (through Google AdMob) that helps keep the App free;
- maintain the security, integrity, and proper functioning of the App; and
- comply with our legal obligations.
We do not sell your personal data, and we do not use it to build advertising profiles ourselves.
4. How information is shared
We share information only as follows:
- Service providers / infrastructure. Our hosting and content-delivery providers (such as Supabase and content delivery / storage services) process technical data on our behalf to deliver the App.
- Advertising. Google AdMob processes device and usage data to serve ads, as described in Section 2.5.
- App stores. When you download or use the App, the Apple App Store and Google Play process information under their own privacy policies. We do not control their practices.
- Legal reasons. We may disclose information if required by law, or to protect our rights, users, or the public, to the extent permitted by applicable law.
We do not otherwise share, rent, or sell your personal data.
5. Third-party links and services
The App contains links that take you to third-party websites and services — for example, a business's website or social media, transport providers, map and directions apps, and affiliate booking links on certain tour and activity listings. When you follow one of these links, you leave the App and the third party's own privacy policy and terms apply. Affiliate booking partners may set their own cookies or identifiers to track referrals. We are not responsible for the privacy practices of these third parties, and we encourage you to review their policies.
6. Data retention
Because Favs, preferences, and offline content live on your device, they remain until you delete them or uninstall the App. If you email us, we keep your message for as long as needed to respond and for our reasonable records, then delete it.
7. Security
We take reasonable technical and organizational measures to protect the limited information involved in the App. However, no method of transmission or storage is completely secure, and we cannot guarantee absolute security.
8. Children's privacy
The App is a general-audience travel guide and is not directed to children. We do not knowingly collect personal data from children. If you believe a child has provided us personal information, please contact us so we can address it.
9. Your rights
Depending on where you live, you may have rights over your personal data.
Under Mexican law (LFPDPPP), you have ARCO rights — the right to Access your personal data, and to request its Rectification, Cancellation, or to Object (Oposición) to its processing — as well as the right to revoke any consent you have given. Because the App stores Favs and preferences only on your device and we do not maintain accounts, in most cases you can exercise these directly by managing or deleting the App's data yourself. For anything else, including data you may have sent us by email, contact us using the details below.
If you are in the European Union, United Kingdom, or another region with similar laws, you may have rights to access, correct, delete, restrict, or object to the processing of your personal data, and to data portability, to the extent those laws apply.
To make a request, contact us at hola@theoaxacancoast.com. We will respond as required by applicable law. You also have the right to lodge a complaint with your local data-protection authority — in Mexico, this is the competent national data-protection authority.
10. International users and data transfers
The App is operated from Mexico and is available worldwide. Service providers we use (such as our hosting provider and Google AdMob) may process data in countries other than your own, which may have different data-protection rules. Where required, we rely on appropriate safeguards for such processing. By using the App, you understand that information may be processed in these locations.
11. Changes to this policy
We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. When we do, we will revise the "Last updated" date above and make the updated policy available in the App. Significant changes will be reflected here; please review the policy periodically.
